Gangnam Style YouTube video earns $8m in advertising

The cult YouTube video clip for the pop song “Gangnam Style” by the South Korean artist PSY has broken numerous records around the globe. In December 2012, “Gangnam Style” became the first online video to break a billion hits on the internet surpassing Justin Bieber’s single “Baby”. Recent figures show that the clip has been viewed 1.23 billion times and that it is by far the most liked video in the history of YouTube. gangnam-style-featureThe actual meaning of the phrase “Gangnam Style” refers to a lifestyle associated with the Gangnam district of Seoul which is seen by South Koreans as the Beverly Hills equivalent district of Seoul. The video clip has also launched a thousand parodies and is also the source for many themed dance mobs around the world. The video is also a huge success in advertising terms and has made over $8 million in YouTube advertising revenue since its release in July 2012.
